WOCA Exterior Wood Oil – How to Use

Before you start: Untreated softwoods (except red cedar) and larch must be pre-treated with WOCA Exterior Wood Primer first. Only work in dry weather and at a minimum of 13 °C – avoid strong direct sun and extreme heat. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first.
1
Clean the wood
Clean both new and previously treated wood surfaces with Exterior Wood Cleaner before starting the oil treatment.
2
Let it dry
Let the wood dry for at least 24 hours afterwards, so the residual moisture stays below 17 %. Remove any raised wood fibres with fine sandpaper (grit 120–150).
3
Stir well
Stir the oil thoroughly before use.
4
Apply the oil
Apply the oil in a thin, even coat with a brush or the WOCA oil applicator, starting at the end grain. The oil looks white while wet; it can take a few minutes for the wood to take on its oiled appearance as the water evaporates first.
5
Remove the excess
After no more than 5 minutes, remove any excess oil with a clean cotton cloth – pay particular attention to joints and cracks.
6
Repeat if needed
Repeat steps 4 and 5 if the wood still doesn't look saturated with oil.
7
Buff (optional)
Once the wood is dry, it can be buffed with a polishing pad or a buffing machine – this makes the surface extra hard-wearing.
Curing & notes: Depending on weather and temperature, it can take 24–48 hours at 20 °C for the oil to fully cure. During this time, the wood must not be exposed to any moisture. Untreated softwoods and larch always need WOCA Exterior Wood Primer first.

Note for furniture: For Exterior Wood Oil in Black, Anthracite and Walnut, we recommend re-oiling with the Natural shade to avoid any possible colour transfer.
